About Love After Love

Weilong, a Shanghainese schoolgirl, seeks for solace and secondary education in Hong Kong under the protection of her aunt Mrs Liang. But her socialite custodian has other plans for her: the teenager would become yet another valuable asset to be pawned to rich men.

Director's Note

The film is an adaptation of Eileen Chang’s first published short story. I love this novel because it is a brutal story about a mixed-up and hypocritical milieu in Hong Kong, shortly before the Second World War. There, the tropical and primal world is dressed in eclectic fineries, and the most melodramatic emotions and relationships are expressed as if they were ordinary. I wanted to describe this unique set-up, rather than doing another fancy love story film.

Her films have been selected in all the major international festivals (Cannes, Venice, Berlin, Hong Kong) and won many awards, including the Best Actress Award and Price of Ecumenical Jury at the 45th Berlin Film Festival for Summer Snow (1995), Best Actress at the 68th Venice Festival for A Simple Life (2012) and Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at 77th Venice Film Festival, making Ann Hui the first female filmmaker to receive this award.

About Hong Kong On Screen (HKOS)

Hong Kong On Screen was founded in early 2022 in Los Angeles by a group of Hongkongers. HKOS is a non-profit film festival that aims to promote creativity and culture through art. HKOS, as the name indicates, is all about Hong Kong. The festival presents feature films, documentaries, forums, and many other types of works about Hong Kong - made in Hong Kong and by Hong Kong artists - to the community of greater Los Angeles.

Our mission is to preserve Hong Kong’s freedom of speech and promote diversity in Los Angeles through cinema, conversation, and culture. In our commitment to serving filmmakers and moviegoers, we hope to provide a platform for Hong Kong talents and stories.
